I was out in the balcony, going to water my tomato plant, when a bird flew out from the corner. We have a bbq on the balcony at that corner, leaving a small space between the bbq and the wall. there is an half empty terracota pot there. i have seen the bird there before. i thought it was sheltering there from the heat. I was shocked by the sudden movement of the bird flying out beside me, as I didn't expect it to be there. Andrew went out to see what the commotion was about. And guess what - we found 2 eggs in the pot!!! Anyway, we ended up cleaning the space because it was messy with bird nuts and also some soil. Andrew moved the pot to another corner, away from the BBQ. All the while there were two birds circling our place - and perching at the buiding across the road. After we finished cleaning up, one bird flew back to inspect. Stupid bird though. couldn't find the eggs in the pot. I think it didn't expect the pot to be so far away. After observing for about half an hour, Andrew put the pot back about half a meter from the original spot. And this time they got it. The mother bird is hatching again now, sitting on the pot. But we are worried that the pot would be too hot during the day, as it is now not shaded by the BBQ. Would the eggs be 'cooked' by the sun.........

Jan so cute! Wow laying their eggs in your pot! Did you take any pictures? i don't think the egg would be cooked. Is it possible to provide some shade around the pot? An umbrella?

No. Didn't take a picture. The birdy would sure fly away when we go out. So the most I can do is to take the picture of the eggs in the pot . You know, on the balcony there is usually a section about 30cm beyond the fence. When we cleaned up the balcony we found a lot of bird droppings there. Now I know why. The father bird has been perching there - guarding the mother bird and the eggs.

not yet, sept poor birdie. the weather has been really hot these few days. i think we will have a barbecued bird soon anway, i baked some buns saturday morning, too many for two of us. so i told andy to feed the bird. he made some bread crumb using the handheld bamix. i gave him two small round plastic takeaway container which he filled with the crumb and water. however.... because the weather was hot, he opened up the windows in the living room. the bird of course flew away when andy came out with the food. then it came back, surveyed the place and plopped back to its pot. a few hours later i realised it wasn't there anymore. andy said maybe it didn't like the smell of the bread. so he removed the bread and water. but i think it was the opened windows that threatened the bird. what do you think? funny now we two behave like two grandparents checking on the bird

Yar it's probably the window that is scaring the birds. But maybe after awhile, they will fly back when they see the window is not a threat. I think it's so cool. I only have crows that fly into my mum's kitchen.

Here is the picture of the bird in the pot. Taken a minute ago. Andy put that piece of thing on top of the pot to give it a shade.

Jan I see you provide some shade for the pot or eggs or whatever. ;D How long does it take for eggs to hatch? it's really neat to see the birds nestling at your balcony. It's like rearing a pet.
