Hi This CNY is really a busy time for me. Besides preparing for my housewarming, (i've just shifted), I have to bake pineapple tarts and chocolate cookies... something my family always look forward to from me During the reunion, hv gone to Chinatown at 2am. So surprised to see so many people still doing their last min shopping there!!! Managed to get five bunches of girl thingy willow... they look great at good price ($2 per bunch)... normally one bunch would cost about $10. Offer is due to clearing of stock before the break of the day. I've been eating and eating.... practically enjoying all the goodies... oops...i am not watching my weight anymore... I love all the pineapple tarts, love letters, kueh bangkit, traditional almond cookies hmmm yummy. For reunion, we have our usual steam-boat... my mum always said it is very easy, no need to cook lah!! ;D That's quite true except that you need to cut and slice some of the food. Moreover it does not dirty the kitchen that much.... I am going to be very busy tomorrow frying and cooking for my housewarming party. Cheers & GONG XI FA CAI to all

Same as you HappyFamily, we had steamboat for reunion too. Have also been snacking on CNY goodies but the ones here are not as nice. Miss those in S'pore. Have a nice housewarming. And congratulations on your new home.

This year reunion dinner was also a very busy occasion for me. I cooked for my family for the first time. In the past, it was always mum who cooked for reunion dinner. The last few years we had steamboat too as an easy way out. This year mum said she was tired of cooking, and actually wanted us to book a restaurant for dinner. Unfortunately we left it too late. My parents arrived in Melbourne on Friday. We tried to make booking on Saturday, and by then all restaurants nearby in Chinatown were fully booked, even for the New Year Day itself. So we ended up cooking at home and I volunteered a few dishes of my own, ie. vegetarian yee sang, yam ring, loh han chai, fried prawn in butter sauce and mango pudding. Mum cooked a few other dishes.
As for baking, I didn't bake anything. Have been baking this and that throughout the year and didn't feel like baking anything for new year. After all, there is no 'nou-gia' (little kids) in my family anymore. So nobody would really nibble.
It was a quiet affair in Chinatown this year on CNY. Even chinese shops were open, and not many people were out wearing new clothes. However, I believe today (Saturday) was the real celebration as there would be food stalls, cultural shows etc in town. Unfortunately, I couldn't go because of other engagement.

due to my mom's poor health, we decided to have it outside. A stall that is cheap and good. Anyone coming home, let me know coz' i will bring you there.
for the past 12 years, i had steamboat dinner at IL's plc. This yr, my SIL decided on Sunday that it will be potluck.
So, we had curry fish head, chilli crabs, satay, fried mee, yu tiao, a kind of fish maw soup, butter prawns, curry chicken and a dessert.
boring isn't it?

Hi there, I am new to this site. A friend I met here in Denver Colorado introduced me to this site. She is a fabulous cook from what I can tell and am so excited to be going to her home on the 19th to have a super meal. I will only bring flowers or chocolate since I cannot even try to cook something half way decent like she does. I am the youngest of ten and Mom and my sisters are all great cooks so I guess I get to be the one that is spoilt a little eh. Beh hiau choo lah.
Penang Hokkien. Anyone else from Colorado on this site? I live in Northern Colorado, Longmnt/Mead area.
Thanks for starting this site.
