Before I ponder over this, I have no doubt that rice is a main dish to us Chinese...but today, as I was searching for a fragrance rice recipe online, this thought came into me, is rice considered as a main dish or a side?
In the western country, rice is definitely considered as a side. After all these searchings, I start to have a different way of looking at rice now.
What is your opinion on this?

if it is fried rice, then it is main. if it is plain rice then it is side.

This is a difficult question that calls for a lot of consideration ;D
I think it is very hard to classify rice since rice is not a western food. In western concept, the main meal is something you can eat on its own and side dishes are to complement the main dishes. Since for Asian, we eat the rice with other dishes, so probably it can be considered a main. But then, it cannot be eaten on its own so it is not a real main. (OK, can eat on its own if you really really have no dishes to go with it ;D)
Fried rice is definitely a main course, since you can eat it on its own. Possibly also Pilaf and Palao (sp?). Others like rice salads are side dishes. That's my humble opinion.

Hmmm....very interesting answers I guess like what Jan said, this question really calls for alot of consideration. Each has their own point of view Jan, I know of someone who can eat plain rice on its own...if there is really nothing else for him to eat at home, he really eats plain rice if he's hungry! Can u guess who he is?..hehe

Definitely needs some pondering since all the dishes to go with the rice should be called side dishes right? (especially you do it like angmoh to take some of each to put on the sides of your plate before eating) In that case, the rice would be main dish??

When I was a student living in Australia for the first time, I went off rice for a while. At that time I just thought I had enough rice in the last 18-19 years, so enough is enough and I wanted to have something else. But that didn't last long, I cannot live without my porridge! Most of the time whenever I am hungry, it is either a simple instant noodle with a fried egg and some vegie, or a bowl of porridge with also a fried egg and some condiments.
Once I knew a guy who was about to go studying overseas. He had cereal for breakfast every morning while the rest of his family had porridge/rice. He said that was so that he got used to ang moh's food ;D
