Really ;D
It was titled as such. Translated from Chinese to Indonesian, and now I am translating it to English.
He appeared suddenly that year, pretty ordinary looking person. Urged by my roommate Siao Cien, I forced myself to make friends with him. Gradually I found that he was a very understanding and soft-hearted person.
Days passed and we grew closer. Our relationship grew stronger and our friends supported us.
One day in the year of our graduation, he said to me, "I've got a scholarship to further my study in the USA. I don't know how long I'll be there. Could we get engaged before I go?"
Probably because of my unwillingness to let him go, I nodded in agreement. We got engaged the day after graduation. Not long after that, he boarded the plane and flew to a foreign country. I got a good job, started my days at 9 am and worked till 5 pm. International phonecalls were our ways to keep in touch
One day, an unfortunate event occurred. That morning, on my way to work, a taxy took a sharp turn trying to avoid a dog on the street. I passed out. I don't know how long it took, but when I came to I was in a hospital surrounded by family members who quickly called the doctor.
"Dad. What happened?" I tried calling out. But why couldn't I call out?
The doctor approached me and checked me out. A nurse injected me with some serum and asked everybody else to leave the room.
When I came to again, what I saw was the sad faces of everybody. What actually had happened? Why couldn't I speak? With lots of sadness, dad told me , "Sioa Min, the doctor said your nerves are damaged. You won't be able to speak for a while, then you will gradually improve."
"I don't want!" I tried to hit the bed, opened my mouth widely to scream, but could only make a silent protest.
When I got back home, my life changed completely. The telephone ring which I longed for in the past was now a scary thing. I didn't go out anymore. I wasted myself. Dad started to think about moving house. And him? On the other side of the world, he only knew that I have cancelled our engagement, his phonecalls went unanswered, his letters were like stones sinking to the bottom of the ocean.
Two years had passed, I had slowly come out of the darkness, started a new life and learned sign language to communicate with others. One day Siao Cien came to my house to celebrate my birthday and also to tell me that he had come back, now working as an engineer. I didn't say a word. Then suddenly the door bell rang. Everybody heard the urgent and repeated door bell sounds, and didn't know what to do. Finally dad opened the door and the whole house went quite suddenly. He was there, standing in front of my house. He took a deep breath, walk slowly to me and skillfully signed ,"Forgive me! I was one one year late to see you. In this one year, I learned sign language hoping for this day to come. I don't care if you have changed. You are the person I love most forever. I will not love anybody else. Let's get married!"
The End
