Do you know your skin type? To care for your skin properly, you need to first know what type of skin you have. There are generally 5 separate classifications: normal, dry, oily, combination & problem. What is yours?
Normal
Complexion is soft, supple, smooth, fresh, even & fine-textured, & free of blemishes. It seldom looks shiny & oily or feels tight & dry.
Dry
This type is usually delicate, fine-textured & rather transparent looking. It feels tight & drawn & has a tendency toward fine lines around the eyes, mouth & throat. It may itch & feel uncomfortable, especially after washing. Whiteheads are likely to form often around the eye area.
Oily
Complexion is often coarse-textured, sallow & greasy. It tends to have pimples, enlarged pores, blackheads & whiteheads. Makeup is easily absorbed. Oiliness tends to reappear within an hour after washing.
Combination
Most complexions fall into this category. The "T-zone" (forehead, nose & chin) is oily, & the rest of the face is dry & flaky. The degree of oiliness or dryness in both areas may vary but both areas require separate treatment to restore them to a healthy, uniform condition.
Problem
This type requires the assistance of a dermatologist if the problem is serious or if it involves acne. It is typified by large pores, blemishes, blackheads, whiteheads & red blotches. Problem skin is usually very oily, coarse-textured & subject to nervous disturbances, it easily peels & windburns.
In addition to the five skin types, there are two skin conditions which may occur together or separately: allergic skin & sensitive skin. These conditions may occur with any skin type.
Allergic
Approximately 10% of people who use cosmetics are allergic to them. Very often, you can detect an allergy if you suffer any of the following symptoms when applying makeup or beauty products: sneezing, wheezing, swollen eyelids, coughing, itching, breakouts, chapped lips or scalp rash. Use "hypoallergenic" products if you have allergic skin.
Sensitive
Skin appears thin & sometimes pale, & has a tendency to flush easily. It can't be handled harshly or overstimulated. Follow your skin-type program, but use a gentle touch & hypoallergenic products, since sensitive skin is often subject to allergies.
