Saw on satellite tv a few days ago on how to stop tearing when cutting onions. They did 3 experiments: 1. Putting the onion in the fridge 2. Putting onion in a bowl of water 3. Stuffing 2 small pieces of tissues into your nose The one that's most effective is no.3. The cause of our tearing is actually related to us sniffing the onion. So by stuffing tissue, it prevents us from sniffing lesser when we are cutting onions. Anyway, I tried and it worked.

DONT laugh ok.....but I've tried once (ok, maybe twice....this was when i was in my teens) using a mask (u know those for snorkling)! Perfect....no tears and no sniffles. Well almost perfect...other than looking like a clown!!!! So which is better....wearing a mask or putting tissues up your nose!!! *lol*

kristen, mask must go and specially get it whereas tissue can just get it from home anytime. So, to save $ and for the convenience, tissue is a better choice. I must admit, really looks like a clown! ;D
Otherwise, can also hold your breath.

What works also is turning a fan on high and blowing the smell of the onions away from you as you chop. It works for me and also keeps me cool in my hot kitchen at the same time.

Good idea alyssa. The only thing is I don't have a fan at home. So, these days in usually try not to breathe when cutting onions. ;D

Chop a perfect onion by peeling and retaining the root end - this helps keep the pieces together. Chop in half and then slice horizontally without cutting through the root. Continue to chop onon as normal.
