Linlin, nice looking 'buns'! (lol) Was looking at your blog for recipe, then read that u followed hugbear's recipe. So which filling did your hubby like? This is what I made (a while ago) for my son's bday party....purple jello cake. The only 'tough' part was doing the crust - was more troublesome than I envisage!! Hey Kirsten! Thank u thank u ;D Hubby likes curry buns the most, he has always been a fan of curry for some reasons..hehe Your purple jelly cake looks very interesting, combination of jelly & crust, something unique...good job!

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone. Actually the jello cake is not my 'original' idea. A colleague told me that she ate a rather 'unique cake' at a party and so I decided to try it out. Edith, I've updated the pix to include a side profile of the purple jello cake. This is my son's 3rd bday cake which some of you heard me talking about awhile ago. I was rather tired making it (which took me 3 days to complete as I did it in stages) so the pix are limited and not that great. My son was happy with his 'power ranger'...unfortunately he wasn't too keen eating the cake!!! He's not a very cake-y person!

How do you do "the power ranger picture" onto the cake? jojong, the 'power ranger' is made of chocolate. I just slowly lowered it onto the frosted chocolate cake. unfortunatley didn't take into consideration the warm M'sian weather and hence the power ranger melted and stretched a little bit the next day (sigh)!

Lynda Is that tomato or terong asam in your asam pedas? Here is what I made for last night dessert - Apple Yeast Sugar Tart. Very easy to make and a good way to use up 'no-so-fresh' apples.

Making kaloji (mua chee) today, as suggested by Jo But my peanut is too finely ground. Errrh.. should have stopped the grinder a few seconds before. I tried both Amy Beh's recipe and another one from M4M. The M4M steaming method is much better, taking out the guessing game from steaming.

Lynda Daun salam is indonesian bayleaf. Some western cookbooks suggest replacing it with bayleaf, but the smell is totally different. Maybe you can find daun salam in malay market ? I got mine here from Indonesian store, both in dried form and frozen form. Sometime instead of daun salam I use daun jeruk purut (kaffir lime leaves) - nice smell also

Janny,
Your mua chee make me salivating.
Just had mua chee a couple days ago at food fair. Was thinking of making it.
I last tried using microwave method but didn't take out nice. Will steam it.
